🔒 Your files never leave your device

Split PDF documents precisely: extract one page, a range, or several ranges at once from any PDF, straight in your browser. The file is processed locally, so a 300-page report containing confidential sections never gets uploaded anywhere just so you can share pages 12 to 15.

The range box accepts the same shorthand you use when printing. Type 1-3,5 to grab pages one through three plus page five, or 7-12 for a clean chapter. The selected pages are copied into a fresh PDF you can download immediately.

Your original file stays exactly as it was. Splitting creates new documents without modifying the source, so you can extract as many different selections as you need from the same file.

How to split a PDF

  1. Drop your PDF onto the upload area or click to select it.
  2. Enter the pages or ranges you want, for example 1-3,5 or 10-20.
  3. Preview the selection to confirm you picked the right pages.
  4. Click Split to build the new PDF in your browser.
  5. Download the extracted document.

Range syntax that saves time

Single numbers select single pages, hyphens select ranges, and commas combine them. So 1,4,9-11 produces a five-page document made of pages 1, 4, 9, 10, and 11 in that order. This is far faster than deleting every unwanted page by hand from a long file.

A common workflow: split out the pages you need to share, keep the master file private, and send only the extract. Combined with our Merge PDF tool you can rebuild documents in any arrangement.

What splitting a PDF actually does

Splitting reads your PDF and copies only the pages you selected into a brand new document. The pages are lifted out whole, so the extract is a genuine PDF you can share, print, or edit further, not a screenshot or a flattened image of the pages.

The process is non-destructive: your original file is only read, never changed. You can run the same PDF through the tool again and again to pull different selections without ever touching the source.

How it works under the hood

The tool uses the pdf-lib library to open your document and copy the chosen pages into a new PDF built in your browser's memory. When you click Split, that new file is handed straight back to you as a download with no server involved.

Because everything runs in JavaScript on your device, extraction starts instantly and there is no upload wait. The speed depends on your own hardware and the size of the file rather than your connection.

Your PDF stays private

All page extraction happens locally, so your document is never uploaded, stored, or seen by anyone else. That is exactly why the tool is safe for legal exhibits, medical records, and financial statements where only a few pages should ever be shared.

Nothing is retained once you close the tab. If you want proof, switch off your internet connection before splitting; the tool still produces the extract, which shows no upload is taking place.

Tips and best practices

Always use the preview to confirm you grabbed the right pages before you download, especially with multi-range selections where an off-by-one mistake is easy to make. Checking once here saves resending the wrong pages later.

If you need several different extracts from the same document, do them in one sitting while the file is open, changing the range for each. Keeping the master file intact and sending only the relevant extract is also good practice for anything confidential.

Common problems and how to fix them

If your extract is off by a page, remember the range box counts the actual pages in the file, which may not match the printed page numbers. A report whose body starts at printed page 1 often has a cover and contents in front of it, so add that offset when you type the range.

Password-protected PDFs cannot be split until the protection is removed, because the tool cannot read a locked file. Remove the password first, with the owner's permission, then extract the pages you need.

Everyday uses for splitting a PDF

Students pull a single chapter out of a large textbook or lecture pack to study or print without wading through hundreds of pages. Office workers extract just the signature page or the one clause a colleague asked for instead of forwarding a whole contract.

It is also handy for receipts and statements: extract the one month or the single transaction you need to submit for an expense claim or a dispute, and keep the rest of the document private on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Split PDF tool free?

Yes, fully free. No watermark, no limit on splits, and no account needed.

Is my document uploaded during splitting?

No. Page extraction happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your PDF never reaches a server, which is why it is safe for legal, medical, and financial files.

How do I extract multiple ranges at once?

Use commas to combine selections, such as 1-3,5,8-10. All the selected pages go into one new PDF in the order given.

Does splitting change my original PDF?

No. The source file is only read, never modified. Extracted pages are copied into a brand new document.

Will the extracted pages lose quality?

No. Pages are copied at full fidelity, so text stays selectable and images keep their original resolution.

Can I split a very large PDF?

Yes. There is no server size cap since nothing uploads. Extremely large files are limited only by your device's memory, and most split without issues.
