Remove Line Breaks
Turn choppy, broken lines into clean flowing paragraphs in one click.
This tool removes line breaks from text instantly. Paste text that is chopped into short lines, and get back smooth, continuous paragraphs ready to use in a document, email or website.
The classic problem: you copy a passage from a PDF, an email or a subtitle file, and every line ends with a hard return. Pasted into Word or a CMS, it looks ragged and refuses to reflow. Fixing it by hand means deleting every single break. This tool does it in one click.
You choose how aggressive to be: strip every break into one block, or keep paragraph breaks so separate paragraphs stay separate. Processing happens in your browser, so your text is never uploaded.
How to remove line breaks
- Paste your broken text into the input box.
- Choose whether to remove all breaks or keep paragraph breaks.
- Click the button to clean the text.
- Check the result: lines joined, spacing normalized.
- Copy the cleaned text to your clipboard.
Why PDF text pastes with broken lines
PDFs store text line by line as it appears on the page, not as flowing paragraphs. When you copy it, each visual line comes with its own hard return. Email clients do something similar when they wrap plain-text messages at around 70 characters. Removing the breaks restores the paragraph the author actually wrote.
When joining lines, the tool inserts a space where each break was, so words do not get glued together. If a line ends with a hyphenated word split across lines, check the join afterwards, since the tool cannot always know whether the hyphen belongs in the word.
How the tool removes line breaks
The tool scans your text for line-break characters and replaces them, joining the lines back into continuous prose. In the mode that removes every break, all line endings become single spaces so the whole passage flows as one block. In the mode that keeps paragraphs, blank lines are treated as paragraph boundaries and preserved, while the single breaks inside each paragraph are removed.
This is plain JavaScript string work that happens the moment you click, with no upload and no delay. Because it acts on the exact text in the box, you can try one mode, see the result, and switch to the other if the output is not quite what you wanted.
CRLF, LF and where breaks come from
Line breaks are not all the same under the hood. Windows text typically ends lines with a carriage return plus line feed (CRLF), while Mac and Linux use a single line feed (LF). Text copied from PDFs, emails and web pages can carry any mix of these, plus stray carriage returns on their own. The tool recognizes these variants so it can join lines reliably no matter which system produced them.
Understanding the source helps you pick the right mode. A PDF or a wrapped plain-text email usually needs every break removed to rebuild real paragraphs. A document that already has proper blank lines between paragraphs is better cleaned with the paragraph-preserving option, so its structure survives.
Your text is processed privately
Everything runs locally in your browser, so the text you paste to clean up, a contract, a manuscript chapter, a private email thread or subtitle file, is never uploaded or stored. The cleanup happens on your own device and the result appears instantly.
There is no sign-up and no logging of what you paste, and the tool continues to work with no internet connection once the page has loaded. When you close the tab, nothing about your text remains.
Everyday uses
The headline case is rescuing text copied from a PDF, where every visual line ends in a hard return and the passage refuses to reflow when pasted into Word or a CMS. Removing the breaks turns that ragged block back into clean paragraphs you can actually edit and format.
It is just as handy for flattening wrapped email quotes, tidying text pulled from subtitle or caption files, preparing copy for a website field that expects continuous text, and collapsing a multi-line snippet into a single line for a spreadsheet cell or a code comment.
Tips and edge cases
Watch hyphenated words split across two lines. When a PDF breaks "inter-" at the end of one line and "national" at the start of the next, joining the lines can leave "inter- national" with an unwanted hyphen and space. The tool cannot reliably tell a line-break hyphen from a real one, so scan for these after cleaning and fix them by hand.
If you want tidy paragraphs rather than one giant block, use the paragraph-preserving mode and make sure your source actually has blank lines between paragraphs; without them, the tool has no way to know where one paragraph ends and the next begins, and will merge everything.
Common mistakes and related tools
A frequent surprise is choosing full removal on a document you wanted kept in paragraphs, which fuses everything into a single block. If that happens, re-paste the original and pick the paragraph-preserving option instead. Another is expecting perfectly single-spaced output when the source had double spaces; joining fixes breaks, not every spacing quirk.
For deeper whitespace cleanup after joining, run the result through Remove Extra Spaces to collapse double spaces and tabs. If you then need to deduplicate repeated lines, use the Duplicate Line Remover, and to check the cleaned text against a length limit, the Word Counter and Character Counter give you the totals.
Frequently asked questions
Is this tool free?
Yes. Removing line breaks is free, unlimited and requires no account. Paste text as often as you need.
Is my text private?
Yes. The cleanup runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted to a server, so contracts, manuscripts and private emails are safe to clean here.
Can I keep paragraph breaks and only remove mid-paragraph breaks?
Yes. Choose the option that preserves paragraphs. It treats blank lines as paragraph separators and only joins the lines inside each paragraph.
Will words get stuck together when lines are joined?
No. Each removed break is replaced with a single space, so "the end" split across two lines becomes "the end", not "theend".
Does it fix text copied from a PDF?
Yes, this is the most common use. PDF copy-paste inserts a return after every visual line; the tool joins them back into real paragraphs in one click.
Is there a limit on text length?
No practical limit. You can paste an entire chapter or report, and it processes instantly because everything runs locally on your device.
Does it also remove extra spaces?
It normalizes the spaces created by joining lines. For deeper whitespace cleanup, such as double spaces and tabs throughout the text, use our Remove Extra Spaces tool afterwards.
